The wildebeest (plural wildebeest or wildebeests), likewise called the gnu noo or / �nju� / new) is an antelope of the genus Connochaetes.
It is a hooved (ungulate) mammal. Wildebeest is Dutch for "undomesticated beast" or "undomesticated livestocks" in Afrikaans (beest = livestocks), while Connochaetes derives from the Greek expressions konnos (" beard") and also khaite (" streaming hair"). The term "gnu" emanates from the Khoikhoi name for these dogs, "gnou".
